Sage Mahjong is a small, design-led brand making mahjong sets, tiles, and accessories for the way American mahjong is played today — at home, with the people you love, on a Sunday afternoon that somehow turns into evening.
We’re a young company with a focused goal: to design and offer a few mahjong sets we’d genuinely want on our own table, and to look after the people who buy them with the kind of care a small brand actually can.
How Sage Mahjong Started
Sage Mahjong began with a simple frustration. Looking around for a mahjong set, we kept finding the same two extremes — mass-produced sets that felt anonymous, or heirloom sets so precious they almost felt like they shouldn’t be touched. There was a quiet middle missing: well-designed, beautifully finished tiles meant for everyday play, priced for everyday people.
So we started designing our own. The first set was made for a single table — ours — but a few friends saw it, asked for one, and the project quietly grew from there. Sage Mahjong is what came of that.
Our Approach to Design
We design our sets in-house, with a small set of guiding ideas:
- Tiles you want to pick up. The weight, the edges, the way the suits land in your hand — we treat these as design decisions, not afterthoughts.
- Color that earns its place. A pop of color is wonderful. Eight competing palettes on one tile face is not. We try to choose carefully, then commit.
- Designs that age well. A mahjong set should still feel right ten years from now. We pass on what’s purely trendy.
- Considered packaging. The box is part of the set. It should feel like something you’d be happy to leave on a coffee table between games.
We add to the catalog slowly. If a design isn’t pulling its weight, we’d rather take it down than pad the lineup. A small, considered selection is the point — not the limitation.
What Mahjong Means to Us
Mahjong has been bringing people together for more than a century, in living rooms and tea houses and kitchens and patios across the world. It’s a game of patience, pattern-reading, and quiet competition — but mostly it’s a reason to sit down across from people you care about for a few hours and pay attention to each other.
That’s the version of mahjong Sage Mahjong is built around. The Sunday-afternoon version. The “one more hand” version. The version where the conversation matters as much as the win.
Respect for the Game’s Roots
Mahjong’s origins lie in 19th-century China, and from there the game spread and evolved into many beloved variations — Chinese, Singaporean, Taiwanese, Hong Kong, Japanese Riichi, Korean, and the American card-driven version that’s the focus of our work. Each tradition is its own world, with its own rhythm, etiquette, and language.
We design with that history in mind. Our sets are made for American mahjong play, but the tiles, the iconography, and the structure of the game are inherited — and we treat that inheritance with care. Where our designs lean modern, they do so as a way of inviting new players in, not as a way of editing the past out.

We’re a small operation. That comes with limits — we’re not a 24/7 call center, and we’d rather take a few hours to write a thoughtful reply than a few seconds to send a templated one — but it also comes with advantages.
